Smoky Quartz Gemstone Education

Common treatment for Smoky Quartz is heating to bring out deeper color. Though not as common (as there is a readily available abundance of Smoky Quartz in the environment), clear quartz is sometimes irradiated to bring out the smoky color.

As with most irradiated gemstones (such as blue topaz), it is normally followed with heating to stabilize the radiation. And as with heating, is near impossible to tell when either methods have been applied (heating or radiation).  Both methods are considered stable and safe for wearing.

We disclose if we know or suspect either method. Even so, you should always assume either method may have been used when purchasing this Gemstone.

Clean with soft toothbrush, warm water, and mild dish soap that does not contain bleaches.  Blue Dawn is recommended.  Polish up.  If you use tarnish removers on your sterling silver, do not get it on the gemstones.  Due to it's hardness (Quartz) being around 7-7.5 on the Moh's Scale of Mineral Hardness, Ultrasonic and steam cleaning should be okay for this gemstone.
